Real Estate Agents Are Posting to Bots

Automated traffic now accounts for 51% of all web traffic. Organic reach is below 3%. The acquisition model most agents built their business on is broken. What remains is a credibility checkpoint.

For the first time in 2024, automated traffic surpassed human activity, accounting for 51% of all web traffic. Most of the people optimizing their Instagram feed right now are not reaching people. They are reaching bots.

The original acquisition model for real estate agents (post content, humans see it, some become clients) has a structural problem. Organic reach for business accounts on Instagram has fallen to 2 to 3%. Facebook is below 2%. The channel has not disappeared. It has been algorithmically gated and automated to the point where organic posting no longer functions as a reliable acquisition pipeline.

AI has accelerated this in two directions. It flooded feeds with generated content, making any individual post harder to distinguish. It also inflated the automated traffic that posts reach. The metrics still move. The underlying activity is increasingly synthetic.

What social media does well now is different from what it did ten years ago. A prospect who is already considering an agent will check their Instagram and their LinkedIn. They are not discovering an agent through a feed. They are confirming whether the one they already found is worth calling. That is verification behavior.

What this means in practice: content still belongs on social platforms. It does different work now. A post about a local market analysis is not converting a stranger into a client. It is providing evidence of expertise to someone who found you another way and is deciding whether to call.

The agents who have recalibrated to this reality are building owned audiences. Email marketing generates $36 for every dollar spent. The audience belongs to you. The algorithm does not control delivery. The list compounds.

The content is the credential. Follower counts are background noise.

The ones still optimizing for follower counts are making the numbers look better while the actual channel gets smaller.
